Slowly Improving Madrid Can Keep Pressure on Atletico with Thursday Win

The season so far for Real Madrid has been very disappointing, but gradually as time has worn on, they have shown slightly better form. They are still in the hunt for second place right now, which is remarkable really when you consider the start they had, and they’ve actually won just four games less than current leaders and rivals Barcelona. That has shown what they have done since we have moved into 2019, and they look like a team that has put their bad start behind them, and not one dwelling on it.

Getafe are in 4th position right now, and had you said at the start of the season that Real Madrid and Getafe would be separated by just one place, you would probably have been laughed at. However, take nothing away from Getafe, they have been impressive and deserve to be where they are. They make themselves tough to beat, and that has enabled them to pick up the odd points to maintain their place in the league. They have Valencia and Sevilla chasing them down, but a top four finish is a definite possibility for this club, and that would mean a shot at the Champions League next season.

Both of these teams have just five games to go in the season, it is crunch time. Real are almost assured of a top four spot, but they would love to beat Atletico into second place, which would send a real message to their rivals after the tough start they had. Getafe would love to make it into the top four, but with two good teams chasing them down and just two points behind, that won’t be easy for them.

What Will Real Madrid do This Summer?

When teams have a bad season, speculation about what will happen in the summer starts a lot earlier than it should. No one is talking about Barcelona and their summer plans as they are on course to win another league title and have a chance of winning the Champions League. However, with Madrid nowhere near those, speculation has already started as to the incomings and outgoings at the club.

The big name on the lips of many people has been Eden Hazard. It seems as though the Belgian star wants out of Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are prepared to let him go for a big fee, and Madrid seem happy to bring him to the club and pay that fee. I would not be surprised if talks had already taken place and something was agreed in principle before the window actually opens in the summer, and it seems as though Hazard will become a Real Madrid player.

He is certainly the kind of player they need to get out of the hole they have put themselves in, and a proper direct replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, who left last summer and wasn’t really replaced. Hazard should bring the swagger and confidence back to this Madrid team, and just like Ronaldo he is capable of being a game changer, whether that is by scoring important goals, or assisting others to put the ball in the back of the net.

When it comes to players who could be leaving Madrid, one name keeps popping up and that is Gareth Bale. The Welshman has struggled to get the fans onside during his time at the club, and that has hindered his progress. There is no doubt that on his day, he is one of the most talented footballers in the world, but those days in a Madrid shirt have been few and far between.

Although it is impossible to say, from the outside Bale looks like a player who would relish the opportunity to return to the Premier League with one of the top six. There has been talk about him making a move to Manchester United, and he would certainly add the kind of flair and attacking intent that their fans want to see come into the club this summer, so that certainly is a possibility.

Elsewhere, a return to Tottenham would also not be a surprise. That is where Bale made his name, and they have not signed a player for 18 months now, have they been saving up to splash the cash on one star? Bale would certainly fit that model and give the already impressive Tottenham side another attacking option.

Chelsea would also be interested in Bale I am sure, although their plans are on hold at the moment due to a transfer embargo that could prevent them from signing anyone this summer. If they get the green light to sign players, then talks surrounding Bale could happen at the same time as the Hazard talks, potentially giving Chelsea the upper hand over the other interested teams.

Whatever eventually happens, I think it’s a safe bet to say some big names will be going in and out of Real Madrid this summer, as the club looks to turn around what has been a very poor campaign.

Getafe vs Real Madrid Betting Tips

At this stage in the season, no one would have predicted that this game would be 3rd vs 4th, but here we are. Real Madrid were far from their best at the start of the season, but by being in 3rd place and still having a chance to climb higher shows just how good they have been over the last couple of months. They have started to turn things around, and look like the Madrid of old that we all know and love.

Getafe have been a real surprise package this season, and their chances of a top four finish and Champions League football are good, they are in the driving seat for that right now. It would be great to see them finish the job off and get into the premier European cup competition, although I think they will have to do that on the back of taking nothing from this game.

While Getafe are respected, Real Madrid are the better team, and they are in a much better frame of mind right now. I fancy Madrid to keep the pressure on Atletico here with a win over Getafe, as they look to steal second place right at the end of the season from their city rivals.

I’m backing a Real Madrid win on Thursday night in this one.
