Fleetwood Value to Pile More Misery on AFC Wimbledon

Things are getting very interesting at the bottom of League One, and there are a huge number of clubs who will be looking over their shoulder and hoping to move away from the relegation zone. Plymouth are in the relegation zone with 30 points, while Fleetwood up in 12th position have 36, meaning they are just six points clear. A bad run from anyone in the bottom half of the table will put them in trouble, and the next few games are going to be very important for everyone.

Right at the bottom of the pile, on just 23 points are AFC Wimbledon and they look as though they are in big trouble right now. They are seven points away from safety, and they need to find a way to string some good performances together, whether that is wins or draws. Bradford are the team directly above them, and they have 27 points on the board so regardless of what happens in this one, AFC Wimbledon will not be able to climb off the bottom of the table during midweek.

Neither team has managed to pick up a win in their last four games, with Fleetwodd drawing three and losing one, while AFC Wimbledon have drawn two and lost two. Last weekend, AFC Wimbledon were completely outclassed by Barnsley, who are up fighting for promotion, so that was no surprise and they eventually lost that game 4-1. Fleetwood picked up a point away at Rochdale, and while they would like to get some wins on the board, with the position they are in, picking up draws is not always a bad thing for them. That isn’t the same for AFC Wimbledon, who are going to have to do something soon to start bridging the gap between themselves and safety.

The League One Relegation Battle

You could argue that anyone from Blackpool up in 8th position down to bottom club AFC Wimbledon are involved in the relegation battle. Despite being in 8th, Blackpool are only nine points clear of the bottom four and while it would take a big turnaround to see them drop down the table, it isn’t something they can forget about.

More than likely though, the relegation battle will affect far fewer teams, although i stil expect we are going to see a great fight. Unless someone really plummets down the table and takes a big turn for the worse, I expect that the four relegated teams this seaosn will come from the clubs placed between 17th and 24th. That covers eight teams, starting with Shrewsbury on 31 points and finishing with AFC Wimbledon on 23 points. If you take the bottom club out of the equation, then we are left with seven teams that are separated by just four points and three of them will be relegated, while four will remain safe.

Of the teams down at the bottom it is Plymouth that have been playing the best by far, and they have won their last three games. That has moved them from being in trouble to being on the cusp of safety, and it is only goal difference that is keeping them in the bottom four. They also play on Tuesday night, they are at home to Walsall who are in 15th, and a point or more from that game will temporarily move them away from trouble, which will be a great achievement for them considering the position they were in just three games ago.

Just 18 games remain for those at the bottom of the table and there is no doubt that the fight for survival starts now. We are in a position where clubs can improve their squads during the transfer window, although that is unlikely to happen at the bottom of League One. Something that clubs could do is bring in loan players from higher divisions, and if there is one thing you need at the bottom of the league it is a goalscorer. If any of the clubs in trouble could manage to find a young and hungry striker to bring in from the Championship, that could certainly help their cause and give them a way to find survival.

Keep your eye on any incomings for the clubs at the bottom of the league and although these are unlikely to be permanent deals, they could still have a huge impact on the outcome of this very close relegation battle.

AFC Wimbledon vs Fleetwood Betting Predictions

This is a big game for both of these two teams at the bottom of League One on Tuesday night. It is unlikely that Fleetwood will drop into the relegation battle properly, but they have to keep their eye on things as they are not too far away from trouble, just six points off the bottom four.

AFC Wimbledon are in a completely different situation to their opponents, and as the club that is at the bottom of the league, they simply have to start winning games, picking up points and putting pressure on those clubs above them. Draws have helped to keep them ticking over recently, but now they have to win, and to do that here they need to bounce back from a heavy defeat at the weekend, when they were completely outplayed at home by Barnsley.

The situation that these two clubs are in means that Fleetwood wouldn’t be too unhappy with a draw, and they know that their situation means that all they have to do is keep the scoreboard ticking over, and keep points going on the board whether that is wins or draws. They would take a draw here, but I think they are going to take more, and I am backing them to win this game and get three points that would move them into the top half of the table and further away from trouble.

This AFC Wimbledon team looks to be in trouble, and the pressure they are under is not making them play any better. They have to win games, but currently lack the quality to do so, something we are going to see again on Tuesday night.

I am backing a Fleetwood win, they look good value and they can take three points back to the north with them.
