AFC Wimbledon to Cause Cup Upset against West Ham

The Carabao Cup doesn’t have the same excitement surrounding it as the FA Cup, but there is still the chance that we will see big shocks and on Tuesday night, it could be the turn of AFC Wimbledon. The Dons take on their Premier League opponents at exactly the right time, and this one looks primed to be an upset.

It has to be said that AFC Wimbledon are not playing too well themselves at the moment in League One, but there is no doubt that they will be up for this game. After their opening five contests they have won just one, drawn two and lost two to put them in 15th place in the standings. There are some good clubs in League One with far greater spending power, so anywhere around mid table will probably be seen as a successful season for them.

West Ham have played three games in the Premier League so far, losing all three, scoring just twice and conceding a very disappointing nine goals. We saw the problems at the club last season, with troubles on and off the pitch and although they have had a long summer to sort this out, it appears that nothing has changed. It would be no surprise to see West Ham go into meltdown over the coming weeks, and a cup defeat to a team two leagues lower than them in the pyramid would certainly not help matters.

Cup Upset on the Cards for AFC Wimbledon?

When you think of the EFL Cup, the first thing you think about is that the top teams often rest some of their players fo the games and this is exactly what I expect West Ham to do. They have struggled in the league so far, and will want everyone fit and focused for their next game on Saturday. Therefore, I think they will see this game on Tuesday as a problem, and something that is getting in the way and because of that I think they will rest quite a few of their first team players.

When you add this to the fact that morale is incredibly low at the club, with the fans deeply unhappy with how things are going, this game looks perfect for an upset. AFC Wimbledon will play their first team, and be looking to win this because just like I have done, they too will see the problems that West Ham are having right now, and they will want to capitalise and make a name for themselves.

The other factor here is going to be the home crowd. The ground where AFC Wimbledon play is very tight and compact, with the fans right on top of the action. The crowd should be a good one on Tuesday, and they will certainly make their presence felt to the West Ham players. It is little things like this that add up to create a cup upset, and something else that is in the favour of AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday.

What Has Gone Wrong at West Ham?

There is no doubt that the past few months have been very troubling if you are a West Ham fan. Their move to the Olympic Stadium was supposed to propel them into the big time, and allow them to compete financially with those at the top of the Premier League. Europe was spoken about, and the feeling around the club was that they were finally going places, despite losing their much loved home, Upton Park.

However, it has been far from that, with a string of poor performances, poor signings and general mis-management causing the scenes that you can see in the video above. One thing West Ham fans are is a passionate bunch, and they do not like what is happening to their football club right now. Whether things change for the good remains to be seen, but the fans, the board and the players and coaching staff are all on different pages right now.

With a summer to solve some issues, it was expected that West Ham would come back in slighlty better shape, but after three Premier League games we have seen much of the same. Away defeats to Liverpool and Arsenal can be excused due to the opposition they are facing, but their home defeat to Bournemouth stirred up emotions again as the fans disapproved of what was happening.

West Ham are a fantastic, and very traditional football club who used to do things the right way. They have a great history, and brought success by developing their own and have a real partnership with the local community. All that appears to be gone now, and we are left with a football club in a huge mess, and one that is going to take a lot of sorting out. While this is happening, they have to try and pick up points on the field, but with so much going off around the players and staff, it is hardly going to be a surprise if they do struggle this season.

AFC Wimbledon vs West Ham Betting Tips

When you look at this game, it has all the ingredients for a cup upset, and I am sure the fans and players at AFC Wimbledon will know that. They will be up for this one, and will see West Ham as a wounded animal coming to town. The more players that West Ham rest, the closer these two look on paper, and when you add in everything else, AFC Wimbledon look to be a good bet to cause a shock here.

It is no surprise to see the bookmakers price West Ham up as the favourites here, but the value in this tie is all with AFC Wimbledon. There is no way I would be backing West Ham at odds on against any team right now, let alone against a team who is hungry to beat them, and one at home in a game where West Ham look set to rest quite a few players.

If you are looking for an interest bet on the Carabao Cup this week then there appears to be few better than AFC Wimbledon in their home tie against West Ham. The home side have nothing to lose, while West Ham know the pressure will mount even further on them should they lose this one. The situation surrounding West Ham certainly favours The Dons, and if you like to cheer on the underdog then at the big price on offer, they are certainly worth a punt.
