Doncaster Fancied to Beat Rivals Lincoln

The EFL Trophy is not the highly regarded competition that some would hope it to be. It would be fair to say that the vast majority of club have little interest in the competition, and would rather rest players ahead of their next league game rather than risk them by playing in this. This outlook from the teams involved makes betting on the competition tough, you don’t really know who is going to take it seriously and the kind of teams we will see on the field, and it is for this reason that you really should tread carefully.

However, there are certain teams that should be looking to go far in this competition, for the boost that it gives them to their league form. Going back a few years ago, Barnsley were in the middle of the League One table around Christmas. They took this competition seriously and went onto win it at Wembley. Then just a couple of months later thanks to the big boost this competition gave them, they made the playoffs and then returned to Wembley with a head full of good memories, and used those to gain promotion to the Championship.

If there is a team right now that could do with that it is Doncaster. They went close to promotion last season, but ultimately fell short. This season Doncaster didn’t get off to the best start with two draws but since then they have won two games to give them a four game unbeaten run. There are a few teams in with chances in League One this season including Doncaster, and this competition could be what gives them the lift and boost they need to go all the way.

If Doncaster do take this seriously and play a good team here then they should have far too much for Lincoln, who are still finding their feet a little in League One. They won their first three games but since then have lost two and then won at the weekend against Fleetwood. The league will be their priority and I expect them to rest a few players for this one with that in mind.

Much of this game depends on the teams that are named but I am hoping Doncaster put out a fairly strong side for this one, with the hope that a good performance and win will help them with their league cause. I’ll take the chance and back Doncaster for success here.
