Cardiff Take On Liverpool In David vs Goliath Clash

The Premier League returns this weekend in the wake of some really exciting European games in both the Champions League and Europa League, and with the end of the season being on the horizon, you can feel the tension starting to rise up and down the country. Teams are starting to put the final pieces in place for one last run towards a successful finish, and for a lot of teams, there’s still a lot on the line. Today we’ll see a series of Saturday games take place, but tomorrow, there are three encounters that are arguably even more important.

One of those games is Cardiff City vs Liverpool, in what is a true David vs Goliath encounter. Both teams are in very different positions with just a few games remaining, and yet, you just know both are going to give it their all with this being one of their final chances to really make an impact in the Premier League. Neither side can really afford to drop points, because even though you may think the relegation-threatened side can just go again next week, there’s always the threat of results going against them elsewhere which could really complicate things.

Cardiff recently had an injection of life in their bid to survive in the Premier League, and while you may not be a fan of Neil Warnock, you can’t deny his ability to keep teams in the hunt. He worked hard to get the Bluebirds promoted last season, and while they may have had a few strong results throughout the course of their current campaign, relegation would still be a huge blow for them. Still, there’s cause for optimism and hope, because we’ve seen many times in this division that it’s not over until the final whistle has blown on the final day.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are in the best position they’ve been in for quite some time. They currently lead the way in the title race, and even though Manchester City have a game in hand, it certainly feels like the Reds are the ones with the momentum. It’ll be interesting to see how they manage their resources now that they’re in the Champions League semi finals, but to be honest, it feels like they’ve got the kind of strength in depth you need to be successful in both competitions – even at this stage of the campaign.

Cardiff’s last six game stretch kicked off with a disappointing 2-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the gulf in class being pretty evident. They went on to register an important 2-0 victory over West Ham, but over the course of the subsequent few weeks, they were brought crashing back down to earth. They lost three games to Chelsea, Manchester City and Burnley, before coming toe to toe with their closest relegation rivals Brighton at the start of the week. Then, against the odds, they beat the Seagulls 2-0 to ensure that this race goes down to the wire.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Liverpool have been in the kind of form that you’d expect from title contenders. They kicked off their most recent run with a narrow 2-1 win over Fulham, before they were able to edge out Tottenham in a very, very important win. They eased to victory over Southampton before a comfortable three points against Porto, which set them up for a 4-1 win away from home to confirm their place in the UCL semi finals. In between those two games they faced off against Chelsea, and thanks to a Mo Salah masterclass, they came away with the win.

It’s going to sound bizarre, but it’s actually true: Cardiff lead the overall head to head standings against Liverpool 18-13, with two draws. One of the primary reasons for this is because most of their encounters went down in the 50s, when Cardiff were the superior team. In recent times, however, Liverpool have been the dominant side, registering five straight wins over the Bluebirds between 2007 and 2018. Their last meeting went down in October when Liverpool ran out 4-1 winners, and you just know that Warnock is going to have revenge on his mind when they meet again this weekend.

The hope is that Aron Gunnarsson will be able to return despite picking up an injury last weekend. Harry Arter is a doubt after he missed out against Brighton, which means Cardiff might be short in the middle of the park – which is the kind of place where they need to be winning the key battles. Nathanial Mendez-Laing put in a great performance last time out, and the expectation is that he will be rewarded with a start as a result. Either way, though, whichever starting XI is put out by Warnock, they’ll have to rely on a lot of heart to get the job done.

Firmino, Henderson and Keita all missed out during the week against Porto, and will almost certainly return here as a result. Joe Gomez is the other big story as he was able to get some minutes under his belt in Portugal after returning from injury, with the expectation being that he will replace Dejan Lovren who is an injury doubt. Aside from that it seems like Klopp is going to go all out in terms of the strength of his first team, because if they don’t give Cardiff the respect they deserve, they’ll be punished.

Cardiff vs Liverpool Betting Prediction

Cardiff are going to give it everything they’ve got, and by that statement alone, you can probably tell which way we’re swinging here. We think they’re going to be conservative in the first 15 minutes or so, but then, they’re really going to start throwing everything they’ve got at the title contenders. The home crowd is probably going to help them out for a while, but eventually, the class of Liverpool will shine through and they’ll start to stretch their legs – in the form of a couple goals to really deflate the atmosphere around the ground.

Cardiff will keep coming forward because they know that they’re in desperate need of points, but in the end, that isn’t going to be the best route forward for them. As we look ahead to the remainder of their fixtures it certainly seems like they’ve got more winnable games than Brighton & Hove Albion do, but of course, football rarely plays by the rules. We do think this is going to be much more competitive than folks are anticipating it to be, but when push comes to shove, there are very few teams around Europe that can compete with Jurgen Klopp’s side when they’re in this kind of form.
